This is a follow up to my guide on how to reverse parallel park properly ( which you can read here ). Before you start you should read over that guide. There are two main mistakes when parking, ending either too far out or too close. The easiest to fix is too far out, yet this is the one people struggle with the most. So in this post I outline what to do if you're too far out. How to recognise it If you have road between the car and the gutter, then it's too far out. For the test (and in general) you need to be within half a meter of the kerb. The gutter is about half a meter wide. So you must be one gutter from the kerb, preferably inside the gutter. Even if you're just on the gutter line itself, as long as there is no road between the car and the gutter. Being too close to the kerb is the most common, and feared, mistake students can make while reverse parallel parking. I've had parents/guardians refuse to teach their kid reverse parking because they don't want to hit the kerb. However, you should be able to prevent hitting the kerb by glancing at the passenger wing-mirror as you reverse. If you do hit the kerb, this is fine as it shouldn't damage the car and on the test just loses one point each time. The issue is most students who hit the kerb then panic , and go forward and back, repeatedly hitting the kerb and going over the six maneuver limit. Over half the time everyone says they want to learn reverse parallel parking. It is the thing everyone worries about, yet if done right it's actually easier than a three point turn. Once students are comfortable with handling the car it comes time to learn the road rules. Start with learning the different type of road signs (which you can read here) . Then move on to using these signs and who has right of way. I also explain the difference between give-way signs and stop signs, as well as how to use them correctly (which you can read here) . Who has right of way is very simple and important to know, yet many don't understand it correctly. So here I'll explain who has right of way in different situations in a simple and memorable way.
