Reverse Parallel Parking: How to fix being too far away

This is a follow up to my guide on how to reverse parallel park properly ( which you can read here ). Before you start you should read over that guide. There are two main mistakes when parking, ending either too far out or too close. The easiest to fix is too far out, yet this is the one people struggle with the most. So in this post I outline what to do if you're too far out. How to recognise it If you have road between the car and the gutter, then it's too far out. For the test (and in general) you need to be within half a meter of the kerb. The gutter is about half a meter wide. So you must be one gutter from the kerb, preferably inside the gutter. Even if you're just on the gutter line itself, as long as there is no road between the car and the gutter. Reverse Parallel Parking: How to fix being too close

This is a follow up to my guide on how to reverse parallel park properly ( which you can read here ). Before you start you should read over that guide. Being too close to the kerb is the most common, and feared, mistake students can make while reverse parallel parking. I've had parents/guardians refuse to teach their kid reverse parking because they don't want to hit the kerb. However, you should be able to prevent hitting the kerb by glancing at the passenger wing-mirror as you reverse. If you do hit the kerb, this is fine as it shouldn't damage the car and on the test just loses one point each time. The issue is most students who hit the kerb then panic , and go forward and back, repeatedly hitting the kerb and going over the six maneuver limit. Follow this guide if you hit the kerb (or go close to it) and you will fix it up nicely. How to recognise it This is very easy to recognise. When I start a lesson I always ask what the parents/guardians want from the lessons, and then I ask the student what they also want. Over half the time everyone says they want to learn reverse parallel parking. It is the thing everyone worries about, yet if done right it's actually easier than a three point turn. Follow this guide and you will easily be able to reverse parallel park correctly every time. Tips and Tricks Some basic tips and tricks before you start will make parking so easy. First, you aren't parking next to a car . By this I mean think of the car next to you as a box, nothing else. Almost everyone thinks of it as a car, so they line up with the back tyre, or the back window. This can be an issue, and people have failed because of it. What if the testing officer gives you a large ute with no back window? Or a tiny car with no boot? Think of the other car as a box and you can park next to anything, it doesn't even have to be a car. Once students are comfortable with handling the car it comes time to learn the road rules. Start with learning the different type of road signs (which you can read here) . Then move on to using these signs and who has right of way. I also explain the difference between give-way signs and stop signs, as well as how to use them correctly (which you can read here) . Who has right of way is very simple and important to know, yet many don't understand it correctly. So here I'll explain who has right of way in different situations in a simple and memorable way. In the first picture below we have a red car waiting to turn left, and a blue car waiting to turn right. Who gets to go first? Road Signs

There are three main types of road signs in Australia: Legal Signs, Warning Signs, and Information Signs. 1. Legal Signs Legal signs are Red, White, and Black. They can be a combination of any two colours, or of all three. As you can see in the pictures below. Legal Signs The more sides to the sign the more dangerous or important it is, although this is an older reason for the shapes and not always still true. For example, a stop sign has eight sides as it is on a dangerous intersection, while a give-way sign only has three sides as it is not as dangerous. As a driver you MUST obey these signs at all times, doing as they direct. These are legal signs, failing to obey them can result in fines, demerits, and an instant fail on the test as it's breaking the law . 2. Warning Signs Warning signs are Black and Yellow, they can be square, diamond, or round.
