This is a follow up to my guide on how to reverse parallel park properly ( which you can read here ). Before you start you should read over that guide. There are two main mistakes when parking, ending either too far out or too close. The easiest to fix is too far out, yet this is the one people struggle with the most. So in this post I outline what to do if you're too far out. How to recognise it If you have road between the car and the gutter, then it's too far out. For the test (and in general) you need to be within half a meter of the kerb. The gutter is about half a meter wide. So you must be one gutter from the kerb, preferably inside the gutter. Even if you're just on the gutter line itself, as long as there is no road between the car and the gutter. Reverse Parallel Parking: How to fix being too close

This is a follow up to my guide on how to reverse parallel park properly ( which you can read here ). Before you start you should read over that guide. Being too close to the kerb is the most common, and feared, mistake students can make while reverse parallel parking. I've had parents/guardians refuse to teach their kid reverse parking because they don't want to hit the kerb. However, you should be able to prevent hitting the kerb by glancing at the passenger wing-mirror as you reverse. If you do hit the kerb, this is fine as it shouldn't damage the car and on the test just loses one point each time. The issue is most students who hit the kerb then panic , and go forward and back, repeatedly hitting the kerb and going over the six maneuver limit. Learning to Drive: Reverse Parking Properly

When I start a lesson I always ask what the parents/guardians want from the lessons, and then I ask the student what they also want. Over half the time everyone says they want to learn reverse parallel parking. It is the thing everyone worries about, yet if done right it's actually easier than a three point turn. Follow this guide and you will easily be able to reverse parallel park correctly every time. Tips and Tricks Some basic tips and tricks before you start will make parking so easy. First, you aren't parking next to a car . By this I mean think of the car next to you as a box, nothing else. Almost everyone thinks of it as a car, so they line up with the back tyre, or the back window. This can be an issue, and people have failed because of it. What if the testing officer gives you a large ute with no back window? Or a tiny car with no boot? Think of the other car as a box and you can park next to anything, it doesn't even have to be a car. Once students are comfortable with handling the car it comes time to learn the road rules. Start with learning the different type of road signs (which you can read here) . Rights at Lights

Remember the right of way for intersections? If not click here as it's important . Drivers must know who gets to go first, and why, before they learn how to turn at lights. Otherwise it results in confusion and possible issues later (like accidents or failing the test). Turning right at lights without an arrow is one of the things many drivers (not just learners) get wrong or worry about. Yet it is one of the easiest and safest things when done right. Wait in the intersection, put the drivers seat on the last line (you can be even further forward if the intersection is big enough).
